Advantix and Frontline are the two best-selling brands in the flea and tick control marketplace and therefore many consumers would like a simple, easy to understand comparison of Advantix vs. Frontline in their search to find the best flea treatment for their dog. Let’s take a look at how we can keep Fido from getting flea bites.
Before we begin it is important that we are all on the same page here.
Advantix is manufactured by Bayer and there are two different versions of this product for dogs. The original formula is called K9 Advantix. Recently, Bayer introduced an improved formula and calls it K9 Advantix II.
Similarly, Frontline is manufactured by a company called Merial and there are several different products featuring the Frontline name. There is the original product simply called Frontline and there is a stronger, improved version called Frontline Plus.
What follows below is a comparison between the two original formulas (K9 Advantix vs. Frontline). You can find a comparison of the two higher end products at “K9 Advantix II vs. Frontline Plus”.
The Original K9 Advantix vs. the Original Frontline
First and foremost, you do not want to spend too much time or energy on evaluating these two options. The primary reason for that is because Merial stopped manufacturing and distributing Frontline many years ago and replaced it with Frontline Plus around 2000 or 2001. With Frontline Plus they add an insect growth regulator called (S)-methoprene to kill flea eggs and larvae.
The original K9 Advantix is still available on a limited basis. Amazon list the product here. With that said, Bayer seems to have stopped “supporting” the product as you cannot find it online in any of its website literature geared towards public consumption. However, I did locate a corporate reference to it here:
Personally, I think it is just a matter of time before the product is discontinued altogether.
With that said, the original formula killed fleas, ticks, lice and mosquitoes just like the new and more powerful formula found in K9 Advantix II. However, like the original Frontline, the original Advantix did not kill flea eggs and larvae.
So, the primary difference between the original K9 Advantix and the original Frontline was that the former repelled biting flies, killed and repelled mosquitoes, and also repelled tick and fleas.
Obviously, you can no longer buy the original Frontline. And my advice is to pass on the original Advantix (if you can still find it somewhere besides Amazon). You can read more about the current top brands here and also read a review of Advantix II vs. Frontline Plus.
